Fernie
Area or you can call it the Elk Valley was the coal bonanza era
at the beginning of the 20th Century. Some mines are still in operation,
but the total volume of coal per year now is not greater, then 20
mil tones. Beside the coal and mineral mines, the Fernie Area is
a world class skiing resort and summer recreation region. New resort
facilities are growing up everywhere around Fernie. Access to Fernie
area is by Highway 3 from South Alberta, or by east branch out of
Highway 95, running along the Columbia Valley. In the vicinity of
Fernie, you will find the Heritage Town of Fort Steele, and the
Town of Cranbrook, with an airport. There is an excellent communication
link from Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho and Montana.
